- Melissa Hyman is a cellist and singer based in Asheville, NC whose songs and stage presence radiate warmth and humor. With a deep, jazz-inflected voice and soft-worn sound, she is often compared to Norah Jones. Her lyrics are both surprising and relatable, with broad appeal: Hyman‘s 2009 recording debut Mama Loves You includes songs about lost love, traveling blues and cowardly dragons.
Through the positivity and thoughtful honesty of her music, Melissa Hyman has found a growing and devoted fan base. She has honed her stagecraft with nearly two years of nonstop touring, playing at venues large and small throughout the eastern US, and she continues to tour the Southeast regularly. A versatile songwriter and performer, she shares her infectious joy in music with audiences of all ages.

When Cory Bishop was twelve years old and trying to write songs for the first time, his dad handed him a slip of paper with two-bullet points. Cory kept the paper pinned on the bulletin board above his desk for years, and over the years, it etched itself into the stone walls of his mind. The first of the two bullet points was the first verse from Bob Dylan’s “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues”; a carefully cadenced verse overflowing with metaphors, geographical references, and culturally-laden imagery. The second bullet point on this slip of paper was a quote that his dad attributed to Dylan, or at least Cory’s memory does: “Treat every line of the song as if it were the first line of the song.” Still, a decade later, Cory seeks to incorporate poignant imagery—that attempts to awaken all five of the listener’s senses—into every line of his songs

Wilhelm McKay is a folk/rock group combining the singer/songwriter talents of Chris Wilhelm and Liam McKay. Their sound emphasizes love of a good story delivered in song and employs folk, roots and indie influences. The music is infectious and insightful.
The career of Wilhelm McKay to this point has focused on performing in front of as many audiences as they can as often as possible. Chris and Liam have logged over 100 shows in 2011 and look to increase that number for 2012! They regularly grace the stages of WNC venues and have traveled far and wide including stops in Chicago, Michigan, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia and more. Chris and Liam are also currently working on new material for an upcoming recording that will happen in January at Lakehouse Music in Asheville, NC.

Asheville, NC, December 12, 2011 — In 2009 the Grey Eagle was the definite destination of choice for Valentine’s weekend. Icy roads and sub-freezing temperatures did nothing to quell the excited couples and music lovers who crowded into the sold-out Grey Eagle for an epic night of love songs--69 of them in fact. The Magnetic Fields’ landmark release 69 Love Songs was covered in its entirety. If you were one of the numerous people who couldn’t make it to the last show, or got turned away at the door, this year is your second chance.
Chall Gray, a well-known local producer, writer and restauranteur has teamed with Harvest Records and the Grey Eagle to make this unique event come together. “I’m very excited,” Gray said of the event, “not just to work with the guys at Harvest and the Grey Eagle, but to have such a stellar lineup of bands performing these songs.”
69 Love Songs, a 3-Cd set released in 1999, is considered by many to be a landmark achievement for The Magnetic Fields, and critically regarded as one of the best albums of the last two decades. 69 Love Songs contains songs performed in a variety of styles, from jazz to surf rock, from synth pop to country ballad to Irish folk song, and a diverse group of area musicians will come together for this unique performance. The performers will each perform a set of between 7 and 10 songs, and the range runs the gamut from local indie stars Kovacs & The Polar Bear, to quirky pop trio Now You See Them, crooner Jay Martin, the lo-fi folk band Pilgrim, all the way to the theatrical Holiday Childress, backed by Chuck Lichtenberger and Stephanie Morgan of Stepanie’s Id.
This show will, like its first incarnation, undoubtedly be one of the most interesting and exciting Valentine’s events, and will be talked about for years to come.
